The Vision to Create an Award Winning Remodel
John Cramer, principal of Cramer E. Construction is proud of his recent NARI Contractor of the Year CotY award, because his project excelled despite facing some daunting obstacles. A variance issue that arose when the property was resurveyed meant that the original plan for a large side extension and dormer had to be redesigned. Fortunately, Cramer has an educational background in architecture and construction management, which placed him in good stead when it came time to provide vision and insight for the redesign. The result was a NARI CotY award winning remodel in New Hyde Park, New York that vastly exceeded the homeowner’s expectations.

A new pool heater, a gas barbecue, a fire pit, or even a back-up generator in case of emergencies are just some of the gas powered appliances that people add to their homes. Before you upgrade, it’s a smart move to call in a plumber to make sure your gas lines and gas meter can handle the additional load, says Vincent Scialli, President of Hicksville based Scialli Plumbing & Heating. “Our company is all about building relationships with our clients,” says Scialli. And a big part of that is making sure clients are optimally happy with the features they are paying for, he adds.

Every Homeowner’s Dream Renovating a Home from “Soup to Nuts”
When John Joyce, owner and president of Huntington Station based John J. Contracting Corporation, was asked to do a home renovation from the ground up, he jumped at the opportunity. “Our firm takes on all types of home renovation projects—big and small,” says Joyce. But the projects he enjoys most of all involve a challenge. And building a home from scratch presents just the type of challenge Joyce’s company thrives on.
The home, located in Roslyn, New York was originally an approximately 2,200 square foot Cape Cod style structure, that was around sixty-five or seventy years old, says Joyce. The family had lived in the home for about two years before deciding it was time to renovate. Because they had spent a good period of time in the original space, the owners had a very good idea of what their wants and needs were with respect to the future structure, points out Joyce. Rather than adding on to the existing home, the owners preferred that the project entail a complete tear down, with the end goal of more than doubling the useable square footage of the home to about 4,900 square feet. Not Your Neighbor’s Faucets: The Latest European Designs Arrive!Davis & Warshow, a plumbing supply company founded more than eighty years ago, is the type of company you can feel good about doing business with. As an employee owned company, every Davis & Warshow design consultant and sales professional has a vested interest in client satisfaction. Davis & Warshow also has a keen interest in presenting clients with the most unique, cutting edge and design-forward products, says Sheldon Malc, Director of Showrooms for Davis & Warshow. We stock a full range of products for a broad spectrum of clients, says Malc. But if you’re looking for something truly different that will set your home apart from the neighbors, I suggest speaking with one of our design consultants who can educate you and expand your horizons to the many exciting products on the market, he adds.
Many of the products that Davis & Warshow stocks are exclusive to our showrooms, so you won’t find them at other plumbing supply stores, and certainly not at any of the big box retailers, says Malc. We scour the European markets regularly, handpicking manufacturers that match our quality and design standards and who have products ready to meet the United States’ stringent product safety standards, Malc explains. Because many trends start in Europe and work their way to the United States, our legwork gives us the privilege of introducing products to American consumers that probably won’t show up in other showrooms for several years, he adds. For more than thirty-three years, Rockville Centre’s Floor Décor Carpet One has been the “go to” place for consumers, contractors, and interior designers for flooring, carpet and tile. We’re also well known for our custom upholstery and drapes, says owner Glenn Alterac. This spring, we are excited to announce that we will now be able to provide our clients with even more. Starting immediately, Carpet One Floor Décor is partnering with custom cabinet makers and expert installers to provide clients with complete kitchens and baths, as well as custom built-ins, says Alterac.
The transition into custom cabinetry installation occurred naturally, explains Alterac. We were already providing flooring and tile for our clients’ kitchens and baths. Through our business, we met custom cabinet makers and installers that provide only the highest quality of goods and services. It seemed like a natural transition, says Alterac. A Landscaper Who Knows How to Build Relationships
Matt LaGrassa, owner of LaGrassa Masonry Corporation understands what’s in the consumer’s mind. Most outdoor landscaping and masonry projects are big commitments of time and money and not undertaken lightly, says Matt. In this regard, LaGrassa strives to make each project a personal job. “I don’t take on a million jobs at once and I give each client white glove treatment from our initial meeting up to a project’s completion and beyond,” says LaGrassa. I focus my business on building relationships and I have done so with almost every job I’ve worked on, he adds. Once I finish a client’s backyard paradise, it’s not unusual that I get invited back as a guest to enjoy a family barbecue. To me, that is a testament to the fact that LaGrassa Masonry has succeeded in taking a space and turning it into a place that families can come together for many years. The fact that my clients want me to be part of their celebrations says a lot about the service I provide them, says LaGrassa.

The Devil is in the Details with this Sands Point Home Renovation
Long Island based general contractor Frank Freyvogel loves the craft of building. “We can and do work on all types of “standard renovations”. However, if you’re looking for something different, we can create a room that is beyond your wildest dreams!”
A recent renovation of a waterfront 1960’s Sands Point home showcased all of their skills. The owners originally asked Freyvogel to renovate their kitchen. After that successful project, they called him back repeatedly to remodel and add useable space and character to their home, which included adding several bathrooms, a library and a glass conservatory. The homeowners wanted a nautical theme with unique details and Freyvogel was perfectly happy to accommodate them. In the kitchen he added a gleaming mahogany vaulted ceiling built to resemble a ship’s hull. Freyvogel built the client a beautiful wood-paneled library. He brought in a faux painter to make a wall of panels actually look like library shelves filled with books. The panels also served as hidden doors that led to the next room. Beyond that room, he built the glass and stone conservatory – something their client had always dreamed of having in the home. Stained glass windows built into the stone in the shape of a ship’s port hole kept the nautical look afloat.

Making Sure You Have a Roof Over Your Head
When winter takes a toll on your roof, it’s natural to try to eke out a few years of roof life, by patching or repairing the problem. But this often simply covers up the cause of the damage—such as a leak or corrosion of the underlying portion of the roof. In many cases, if your roof is nearing or has reached its natural life expectancy, a repair or patch can only prolong or even hasten the inevitable.
Gina Marzano of family owned Marcor Construction Roofing & More, says clients with roof damage should consider installing a completely new roofing system, with layers that coordinate and reinforce each other to provide the strongest and most weatherproof roof possible. At Marcor, the Marzanos have put together an Elite roofing system for their clients. It offers an expertly installed new roof and the highest possible warranty. The system uses Owens Corning materials, for which Marcor is a Platinum preferred contractor. The system involves the following steps: • Strip roof down to bare wood: this is a key benefit of an entire roof replacement. It lets roof technicians assess the condition of the wood underneath your old roof and replace as necessary, explains Marzano. • Install the drip edge: the drip edge is a piece of non-corrosive metal that’s installed around the perimeter of the roof. It serves as the initial water proofing barrier by deflecting water from the roof. It is designed to prevent ice damming. • Ice and water shield: this is a self-sealing barrier that maybe applied to some of the sensitive roofing areas that are known for ice damming and water intrusion such as the gutter line, side walls and base of roof protrusions, explains Marzano. • Deck Defense: Deck Defense is an Owens Corning trademarked product that we use as an underlayment, instead of the usual black tar paper protection that most homeowners see when a new roof is going up. It’s lighter, stronger, and better at deflecting water than your standard black underlayment. • Starter strip: this goes around the roof perimeter and seals the edge of the shingles, ensuring that they don’t blow off and also serves as a guide for symmetrical installation, says Marzano. • Shingles: the varieties of shingles are almost endless, says Marzano. However, Owens Corning sure nail technology prevents insufficient nailing or nails blowing through the shingles. Their shingles provide “beauty and defense” in one and are wind resistant up to 130 miles per hour plus they are algae resistant. View full article |
Feeling the Love of a Beautiful Historical Home
Irwin Contracting Inc., a Hauppauge based general contractor has had a winning year. In business since 1986 serving Nassau and Suffolk counties, this family owned and operated company has consistently been recognized by NARI (National Association of the Remodeling Industry) as one of the best remodelers on Long Island. Recently, the company received a prestigious CotY (Contractor of the Year) award for a very unique project. It involved turning an abandoned 100 year old house into a commercial office space, while still retaining the character and architectural integrity of the home.
The home was in fairly poor condition, but had what we call in the business “good bones,” said John Irwin, founder of Irwin Contracting. We didn’t change the floor plan, except to create a long hallway for easier access to common areas and rooms, says Irwin. We also turned what had been family living areas into offices, conference rooms, communal kitchens and bathrooms, and computer cubicle spaces, he adds. The main challenge on this job was to uphold the early 20th century character of the house, while still making it a viable option for commercial office space. The solution was to use a combination of commercial grade products, with the custom molding and carpentry work one would expect in an antique house, says Irwin. To accomplish a “Lloyds of London” feel, we paid close attention to details. All paints were chosen to match the historic colors used in the early 20th century. Irwin even used custom gold-leafed paint to accent the beauty of the restored fireplace and the architectural columns that flanked the front entryway. Doors and moldings became our main focus and definitely our biggest challenge, says Irwin. The doors and molding throughout the house had to be much thicker than the molding used today to keep the house historically significant. Our solution was to painstakingly customize every door and molding, including baseboard, crown, door and window moldings and decorative accents throughout. The work turned into a labor of love for my company and the results were well worth the extra effort, says Irwin. The project culminated in a commercial office space with the feel of a beautifully maintained historical home—all in all a magical place to go to work. |
Highlight Landscape Features
Dowling’s company prefers to focus on their clients’ beautiful outdoor elements and architectural features and not on large, obtrusive lighting fixtures by using small, low voltage copper fixtures in a variety of shapes and sizes. The fixtures are exclusive to the company, and because they are copper, will weather to a beautiful, aged patina, says Dowling. They are so small that they blend in beautifully with most homes and landscapes. There are many different types of fixtures depending on the application. For example, “we may use a different fixture to up light a maple tree than we would to light an evergreen—it’s that specific,” says Dowling. The result is a beautiful glow or spotlight around every feature that is important to you, says Dowling. “We want our clients and their guests to be “less focused on the fixtures and more focused on the output of light,” says Dowling.
